At my job I work with relatively cool tech to do something of societal utility. It’s not planet-saving or anything, but–in anyone’s utopia, if there’ll be servers, someone will have my job. This makes it meaningful in the same way that fixing toilets is meaningful. On some level, we’re all participants in the same capitalist hellscape so we shouldn’t think ourselves relatively virtuous for anything like this, but I appreciate knowing that on a day-to-day, doing my job well should make the world better not worse.
So how does one balance that against the greater evils with which one may be less directly associated?
