Look, I am a simple woman. You put verbiage in front of me like “slay a hedgehog with your naked arse” and I am immediately charmed and intrigued. It is therefore depressing to learn that the words in question come from a hoax or parody – but this piece digs deeper into what this fictional moment still means to Ukraine.
I’ll also take a moment to link this NPR podcast (with transcript) that introduced me to the history of Ukraine as Ukraine. I don’t have the context to evaluate it critically, so if anyone has an equivalent they like better I’d love to hear about it too.
An illustrator I follow left Russia, is in Armenia, is trying to get to Georgia. She couldn’t stomach the invasion. Is there political refugee status for such people yet? Shouldn’t there be?
I don’t know anything about anything – a simple woman, I tell you – but if you have a prayer in you, pray for peace.
